My dad and I went to Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia the last weekend and we stumbled on some interesting facts about the Toyota Sports 800 (Yotahachi) in this small little town. When we arrived at Kuching, the first thing we noticed is that there's old skool cars all around us! You name it and its there, well most of it. Toyota KE-35 hardtops, minis, Honda 800, the old skool Celica, and my favourite, there was 4 units of Toyota Sports 800. Wow, 4 units of Toyota Sports 800 in Kuching, a small little town located at East Malaysia, how? Apparently, during that time West and East Malaysia had different car importers so the importer in East Malaysia i would assume had better taste for cars, haha. The Toyota Sports 800s in Malaysia originated from Sibu, Sarawak 400km down south from Kuching, Sarawak. Unfortunately we could only see 2 of the Yotahachi's as the 2 owners, Peter and Mr. Alex Chan was very helpful and ever so kind to allow us to see their cars. They shared with us their contacts and their story about their cars. The 2 other owners however, were busy at the time when we wanted to visit them. But we sneaked in a bit to have a glance at their cars too.

Mr. Alex Chan's car. Not running condition due to workshop issues. |

Original horn. |
|
Original 3 pedals. |
|
Original Dashboard still in good condition. |
Interesting to know is that, both these cars were similar. Both these cars had the heater mount in the engine bay. The Yotahachi's that were brought to Malaysia like mine did not have the heater mount and no side mirrors, except Peter included the side mirrors in his car. The rear view mirror was either on the dashboard or above it. All the 4 units were very original, approximately 60-90% original parts in them. The only car that was in running condition was Peter's car, and another owner which we were unable to meet. The other owner that we were unable to meet was the first owner of the Toyota Sports 800 in Kuching, and used to work at UMW Toyota, Kuching. He's Yotahachi has been described as the most original one out there.

If you can read Japanese, here's the ad for the spare parts. |
Some info for parts:
There is this magazine called Nostalgic Hero, a Japanese magazine that in one of its issues had information to this factory in Japan which produces parts of the Toyota Sports 800. This magazine ranked the Toyota Sports 800 the top 6 japanese car:
Nostalgic Hero Japanese Car Ranking
Another way to get parts is in Bangkok, Thailand where boats there used the same engine as the Toyota Sports 800, and spare parts are still available there. In Malaysia, two states that are famous for spare parts are Ipoh and Penang. The oil filter, we have heard that Micro brand oil filters do make specifically for the Yotahachi.
hi,nice to meet u,I just wanna ask something about the Toyota sport 800,in malaysia, whr can get the spare part???because i also got a toyota sport 800 need to replay..my location is at KL..thank you
ReplyDeleteHello there, nice to meet another owner of a toyota sports 800! My parts i got most of them from U.S. and ordered them online. You can try to go to places like Ipoh or Penang to dig for spare parts. But not cheap nowadays the parts. I heard also that the engine parts we can get them in Bangkok aswell! Do you have any pictures of your car? :)
Deletehi, my dad own a toyota sport 800... recently i ad sent it to garage to repair it~ i already custom made a petrol tank~ and now i wanna find the rubber parts~ it is kinda difficult to find it in malaysia~ can i noe whr and how u order the rubber parts? or mayb i can custom mae the rubber parts? thanks =D
ReplyDeleteHi there, rubber parts is very difficult to find in Malaysia. What I have on my Toyota Sports 800 are rubber pieces from different cars that I managed to find and could fit, but not perfect. You can try going onto eBay to find parts, or Ipoh... Custom making the rubber parts~ I haven't tried. Where's your location?
ReplyDeletemy location is at kuala lumpur~ de previous ppl who comment is my friend who help me find parts... my dad pass it to me and ask me to find parts and restore it... i searched on ebay, but dun hav rubber parts~
Deleteoh okay i see i see, is your car in a workshop at Damansara Damai? rubber is very difficult to find, how is the condition of your rubber seals that you have on the car now? And which rubber do you want to find? (door, wind screen, roof, etc.) From what people have been telling me, Ipoh you can get parts, Penang maybe. Engine parts Bangkok...
Deleteis thr any classical car workshop at damansara damai? my car currently at sunway~ custom made a new oil tank... rubber parts are totally spoilt~ door, wondow, wind screen~ headache for that~
ReplyDeleteoh no, my friend saw another Toyota Sports 800 at Damansara damai so I thought its yours. front and rear windscreen no choice have to find back original, but the rubber piece where the door and the roof is, can find from other car and then cut to fit the car, cheapest and easiest way. At the petrol cap there should be one more rubber piece that one also I think need to find back the original one. Oh, which shop you sent it to? Normally all my classic cars I send to this workshop at Kelana Jaya, very nice work the mechanics do for me.
Deletecan i get the contact and exact location of the workshop? i wil send my car to a normal garage~ specialized in mers and bmw~ cz i cannot find any classical workshop~
DeleteThe workshop is in Kelana Jaya, use LDP highway from Sunway to Kelana jaya. There will be the Kelana Jaya Giant on your right, and the shell station on your left. Keep on the left lane and then you will see a traffic light, go straight at the traffic light. On your left you will see shop lots and look for 'Sun Mayang Car Care'. The boss name is Tham. He does my car for me very well, but if you want him to do your car nicely, give him time and you must have budget. He can help you maintain the car, and restore it if your car still boleh tahan. Spare parts, he can look for small small parts, modify parts to fit the car but most of the spare parts you must find and give him to fit.
Deletethanks a lot =D i wil send my car to there 2mr afternoon~ are u the toyota sport owner from damansara?
Deleteno worries, always happy to help another owner of a toyota sports 800! yes my toyota corolla ke35 is in the workshop today, and my mechanic told me that you're going to the workshop tmr. yeah i own one toyota sports 800 in damansara, not sure how many are there in damansara :P hopefully can meet you tmr at the workshop.
ReplyDeletei wil be there around 11.30 morning like tat~ from sunway to there~ hope to see u there~ thanks a lot =D
ReplyDeletehey sorry i couldnt meet you today, but i saw your car! it doesnt look so bad! just needs a bit of touch up here and there. The workshop guys got your car started just now when i was there, but your new petrol tank still hasnt been connected. Very original your car! except for the petrol tank! :)
Deletethe ori petrol tank totally cannot use already. so i custom made 1 from sunway there~ got 1 shop name velocity, they can custom made these. aluminium, cost me 1.8k. i hope this car wont hav much problem and parts to be repair. lol
Deletethe ori petrol tank rusted already isit? Yeah i saw the alumimnium tank under the car, very small... But now you have alot of space in your car, can also fit the roof inside the car. WOW! 1.8k for the petrol tank! thats alot! Is your car still at the workshop? After the workshop fix and service your car, i think shouldn't have much problem. Basic service (change oil, oil filter etc.) they should know where to get the parts, because they did for my car already. Only internal engine parts very difficult to find, and also parts like bumper, switches, accessories.
Deleteya, my car stil at workshop~ need some times to find parts and fix it also. hope the internal engine part still ok. yea. 1.8k for the petrol tank quite expensive. less ppl wanna custom or do petrol tank. no choice. the old one totally rusted and leak.
Deleteyeah i just visited the workshop today, and i saw your car there. when they started your car, abit of white smoke but no funny noise so should be still good. Wow, unlucky your ori petrol tank rusted. Do you the roadtax for the car this year or haven't done the roadtax for a few years already?
DeleteWHITE SMOKE!? aiks! hope inside the engine everything is fine. the roadtax ad, my dad din pay for many years. so need to go jpj there settle after de car done. the petrol tank rusted, i took to many place to fix it but cannot be done ad~ so i custom made 1.
DeleteWhite smoke now is because the car hasnt been started for so long, after you run it for a while then should disappear. Oh so you have to do puspakom inspection then. If you need a jpj runner i have a guy. Now the roadtax only rm20 for one year but the insurance is getting more expensive... Wow the petrol so rusted ah?! O.o well luckily you found someone to custom the petrol tank for you.
Deleteoh, so how much is the insurance?
ReplyDeletehi, thanks for ur helping. my toyota sport 800 is already done. today just went to jpj thr. my dad gonna take his car by 2mr from the garage. thanks a lot =D
ReplyDeletehey, glad that its finally done! No worries :D this sunday old skool gang going for a drive to Titi do you want to come?
Deleteooo! do u have a facebook group bout this event? my dad wanna send de car to paint 1st~
Deletefacebook page not yet up... but we normally have it every sunday morning. 8am we will meet, and we will return to pj before lunch. If you want, whenever we are going, i will inform you?
DeleteHi, I am Raymee. my dad Toyota sport 800 has been stolen few months back. too bad until now still don't have any news about that car.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI am from Sabah but now residing in KL. I own a 800s (still in Sabah) but needs repairs to make it running again & bring it down to KL. You mentioned can get parts in Penang or Ipoh - do you have any idea where exactly? Thanks in advance for you help
David
hi,
ReplyDeletei am from sabah too and now still study at Johor, I got sport 800 too and it hve good exterior but not the original. The interior and the engine of the car is quite poor. After i finished my school, i want to repair it. Do you have any suggestion to very good place to repair it? thanks David
Hi David, well the S800 parts in Malaysia are very difficult to find now. But in Penang there is the Publica club from what i've heard and the toyota Publica does share parts with the S800. I'm sorry i'm not too sure where to go to because i havent been finding parts for some time now.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few people that i know that rebuilds engine decently, but you know in Malaysia wherever you go they rebuild engines on the floor or something. If you have the parts for the engine then I can find someone for you to take your engine to for the rebuild.
Also, where you send the car to rebuild will be depending on how much you are willing to spend on the labour to rebuild.
ReplyDeletethanks 4 the info... :)
ReplyDeleteHi RRev, Thanks for the info'. I will check around with my contacts in Penang & see how it goes. I used to get parts from Japan previously but I have now lost the contact. Trying again.
ReplyDeleteHi Mohd jazlan, Is your car still in sabah? Mine will be repaired there pending spare parts. I used to have it looked after but the guy has since passed away. There are still some guys who still do it but you need to have the parts available.
Hi Raymee here. my dad has found back his toyota sport 800 after 3 years. got back the car but in very bad condition. break is not working and rubbers totally worn out. and do u order parts from overseas?
ReplyDeleteHi raymee23 that's good to hear that you managed to get the car back although it is in a bad condition. Where and how did you manage to find it back?
DeleteSome common parts I can find replacements here in kl/pj but specific parts like the actual rubber or engine parts unfortunately even overseas it is difficult to find or very expensive.
Hi, Thank you for your reply. someone msg me on fb that he saw the car at JinJang police station. the police park the car under big hot sun for almost 3 years. that is why the rubbers are badly damaged.
Deleteso now i am looking for rubbers, maybe customade. but still try to find and garage that actually customade the rubbers.
Hi. I'm just curious, are there any Toyota Sport 800 for sale? If anyone is willing to sell, please email me at brianngu_xing@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteAs I live in Dubai I don't have any problem with my license if there you could drive well then police will never interfere in your any work. Also I have one Mercedes sports car and when I need the services I just go for mercedes garage in Dubai here I always get the best services as I want for my car.
